Public Art Renews
In 2000, PURA alongside numerous businesses and city offices, participated in the Art & Soul Street Gallery, an effort of the Pueblo Downtown Association that brought revolving public art to the streets of downtown Pueblo.
“Esperanza”, the artwork pictured here, served as one of these revolving art pieces originally located at 3rd and Main St., then went on to serve as a depiction of Teresita Sandoval, one of Pueblo’s Pioneers at El Pueblo History Museum, Founders Plaza. The plaza was later removed as part of a larger capital improvement planning project.
As Esperanza’s journey continues, in conjunction with the improvements made to the Pueblo City-County Library District, Patrick A. Lucero branch, and with the support of the artist Ted Bueno’s daughter Claire, “Esperanza” was donated to the library in honor of the contributions made by Mr. Bueno as an advocate for equal educational opportunities on the East Side of Pueblo.
Mr. Bueno titled this piece “Esperanza” that translates to hope, in honor of his grandmother who he remembers bringing water from the river and would say to him that “water gives people hope for another day”.
The library resides within PURA’s Mitchell Park South Urban Renewal Area.
